Organisational Background

SMS is a women welfare non-government development organization is committed to contribute in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 specially focus to direct Goal 1(NO POVERTY) ,Goal 2 (GOOD HEALTH and WELL-BEING) Goal 3(GENDER EQUALITY) and Goal 4( PEACH JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS) out of 4 goals. SMS has been running for 24 years are trying to achieve dreams is-“Building a resilience society where each & every single person would be treated impartially with dignity so that all could live a harmonious life. The past 2 decade was observed with the mission to help to reach around 57000 women and children for reducing their poverty through access child-education, women empowerment through income opportunities, well-being of health,
knowledge and capacity building and ensured rights and entitlements.

SMS was established in 1997 by joint venture of 3 University students for an alleviation poverty of the society and promote access to equal rights with dignity for vulnerable women and children. The full of dreams of development needs at vulnerable society in Faridpur in 1997. SMS was started to voluntary work with commercial female sex workers at two brothels in faridpur for building awareness through applied individual motivation and mobilising on HIV/AIDS. Following a long evaluation process, the organization has involved in the developed sectors with legal entity (Directorate of Women Affairs-1999 and NGO Affair’s Bureau-2003) and in the year of 1999.

  • SMS has a substantial length of experience to work with diversified vulnerable groups which includes: Rural and Slums Women and Adolescents, Female Sex Workers (street-based, hotel-based & floating sex-workers), Men Having Sex with men (MSM), Injecting Drug Users (IDUs), Transgender (Hijra), Internal Migrant Workers like – bus/truck drivers & helpers, Rickshaw/cart/van Pullers & their wives, industrial workers specially garment factory workers, Students of Islamic schools, Hotel & Amp; Restaurant Workers, Dock Labourers, City Cleaners, Slum Dwellers, Overseas Migrant Workers, Border Crossing People and People living with HIV/AIDS. 
  • From 1997 to 2021, SMS has completed 36 development programmes and in 1998, 2004, 2005, 2007 floods and 2007 cyclone SIDR emergency response projects with the funding supported of 15 national and international partner (MARIE Stops, HASAB, Action Aid Bangladesh, CARE Bangladesh, MISEREOR Germany, BONDHU Association Germany, UNDP, BRAC, NGO Forum, ACID, Save the Children International, Free A Girl, Kadoorie Charitable Foundation Hongkong, EDUCO Bangladesh,HEKS/Embassy of Switzerland etc agency).

SMS also involved as a networking/alliance partners with SUP, NGO Forum, Shelter Home Management, District Anti-Trafficking, Drugs Control, Child Labour committee, HIV/AIDS network, GAGO Bangladesh, One world, WAGNER, SRVI, WMC She Source. In line with the multi-dimensional aspects and challenges in development sectors of Bangladesh, the SMS extended the advocacy role its programmatic domain beyond women and child rights issues.

SMS is thus, community led as national level women and children development right based organization.
